The Van Isle competition team traveled to Vancouver on October 4th to compete in the Vancouver Brazilian Jiujitsu Championships, an event organized by Katana BJJ. The event was well organized with divisions posted on-line days before the event, brackets posted at the event and all divisions running on time. The referees were well educated and up to speed on all of the rules, most having been or currently being competitors.
The Team was made up of Jean Marc, Matt, Jason Du, Andrew Tishenko, Julian Goodman, and Myriam Luzadas. Andrew fought a tough match and utilized a number of techniques we've been working on, which allowed him to lead the match in points after winning a double leg takedown. He was swept trying to break the guard and eventually lost to points in the last minute. Jason fought a number of hard matches, winning a silver in his division. He then went on to fight in the absolute division where he was submitted after a valiant effort! Myriam fought out of her weight class and secured the silver medal after a loss to a skilled opponent from Checkmat Vancouver. she then went on to fight in the absolute division where she won another silver medal after a loss and a win via points. Matt had one fight against Joseph Chua, which was intense and fast paced. Matt lost by points after Joseph executed a beautiful knee pick takedown. Jean Marc had a great day securing the gold after two intense submission only bouts with Dion Wu and Brian Chang.
We love these events and learned a lot from our wins and losses and look forward to improve our strategies, techniques and reactions! These events are a big benefit to the martial arts community and they allow competitors from Victoria a great chance to gain valuable experience!
