On December 6, 2014 The VIBJJ competition Team consisting of Matt, Tom S., Myriam, and Jason went to Vancouver to compete at the Canadian Brazilian Jiujitsu Federation (CBJJF) 2nd annual BC Provincial Championships. The tournament was held at UBC in the War Memorial Gymnasium.
It was a well organized event that mirrored IBJJF events in setup and rules. Myriam fought first and in her first gi match executed a perfect flying armbar. She won her gold medal by dominating her opponent 12-0. Jason fought next and won his first gi match by executing a sweep from the open guard. He lost his second match narrowly by 1 advantage. At this point Tom appeared sweating and out of breath. He informed the team that he had just fought his first match and won by guillotine. He didn't want to tell us that he was up because he thought we were busy with Jason! Jason's gi matches having been finished, we went to cheer Tom on for his second match. It was a great show ending in an americana submission for Tom. He lost his final match and earned the silver medal for his gi division, but in the process threw the gold medalist with a perfect fireman's carry ending with a loud thud. Matt fought only one match in his gi division and won with a single wing choke for the gold.
Myriam's no gi opponent dropped out, leaving noone for Myriam to fight in her division. Although there was no white belt absolute division, the organisers made an exception for Myriam and she was able to fight in the open weight against a much bigger opponent. She put in a strong fight but could not do enough to secure the win, earning the honorary silver medal. Jason fought next against a tough opponent in the no gi but was narrowly defeated. Tom's first no-gi match saw 9 points to nil on the board, so Tom went for a hail marry armbar which paid off as he won his first fight by submission. He later learned the 9 points were his. His fight for the gold saw him fight the same competitor that he fought for gold for in the gi. Tom was unable to avenge his gi loss and earned double silver. Matt fought a strong opponent and lost by a single advantage point for the honorary silver medal.
This was a great event and we look forward to the next one!
