Competitions are expensive because organizing quality competitions is expensive. We as athletes support organizers because we want more high quality events. Unfortunately, often there is no one to support the athletes.
As island competitors, we are deftly aware of the economic struggle of competing. There doesn't seem to be a large enough population of willing competitors on the island that can support a high quality BJJ event, let alone enough of them to make the experiences worth while. As a result, we often find that besides entrance fees, we battle with ferry fees, gas, accommodation, and other travel costs. As a result, we often have competitors drop out due to financial concerns.
Always willing to rise to the challenge, we have organized our "Competition Fund". The fund is made up of money raised through Open Mats, regular bottle drives and special events. All funds raised are divided amongst our competitors. This fund is the result of hard work put in by all members of VIBJJ to get the talent where it needs to be.
Thanks to the passion and dedication of our students, VIBJJ was amongst the other great Pacific North West schools in rankings at tournaments in 2014. We look forward to the payoff of our hard work as we head in to competitions in 2015. Yet another reason why Van Isle BJJ is undeniably producing high quality jiujitsu on our beautiful little island!
