On June 13, 2015, VIBJJ competition team members Julian, Andrew, Myriam, Matt, and JM participated in the Canadian Brazilian Jiujitsu Federation's BC Provincials. The event is well run and operates under IBJJF rules.
This is the first time that I know of that there were adult black belt matches at the BC Provincials. There were not enough black belts for weight classes so there was one black belt male open weight division. It was stacked as there was Gianni Grippo who was in town for a seminar, Filip Matos, Jeremy Revel, Jordan Reichenbauch and Ross Locke. gianni fought and won three fights against Filip, Jeremy and Jordan. all three matches were competitive and really entertaining.
JM and Matt were in the same gi division at purple light feather, Matt having fought up from rooster weight. The division was stacked as Dion Wu came back into the division after originally registering for feather weight. Matt fought hard against Joseph Chua who he has fought many times. It was a close one that ended in Matt almost achieving a pass for three points but ultimately losing by two points from a takedown. Joseph went on to fight Clint Cooper to a loss putting Clint in the finals. On the other end of the bracket was Dion Wu who fought Faraz Taj to a victory. JM then fought Dion which resulted in an exciting match and a win for JM by points. Dion and Joseph fought it out for bronze which resulted in a points victory for Joesph. JM and Clint had a much anticipated gold medal match which was exciting! JM scored takedown points putting him ahead initially but Clint was able to turn the tides with a sweep from omoplata to tie up the score. JM recovered to his feet and pulled guard. Clint forced the half guard and eventually pressured the pass to side for three points taking the lead. clint was able to come north south and set up a kimura lock which eventually resulted in an armbar in the last 5 seconds. It was an exciting match that saw JM earn a silver medal, having been beaten only by Clint.
Myriam fought next in her gi division. Her first match saw her way up on points after scoring a takedown and a pass with her gi completely over her head. She scored some knee on belly and back mount points before eventually finishing an armbar. Her second match saw her against a stronger wrestler who scored the take down. Myriam worked to guard and eventually the time ran out, Myriam having lost by two points. She fought hard in her bronze medal match earning a double leg takedown and a pass to side control. After earning a knee on belly she won with a kimura.
Andrew played a tight strategy from the feet resulting in two points for the takedown. He ended up in guard and defended sweep attempts but ultimately was submitted via armbar. sometime single round eliminations can seem too quick!
Julian fought only in the no-gi and had two exciting matches. Julian took a very submission focused strategy which almost saw him submit his first opponent with a baseball bat choke. Unfortunately it didnt work out and he gave up pass points. The match ended with Julian progressing to the bronze medal match after his loss. His bronze medal match was incredible as Julian was down points after finding himself mounted. He again went for his baseball bat choke from bottom mount! This time his opponent rolled to escape the choke and Julian ended up in the guard out of bounds. The ref stood them back up but didnt realize that Julian had put his opponent to sleep! There was no tap and in the meantime Julian's opponent came to. The match restarted and Julian ended up losing by one point! Julian joked that he's the only person that can choke his opponent unconscious and still lose!
JM and Matt fought in a stacked purple belt no-gi division. JM beat Dion again, this time by armbar. JM finished his next match in about 45 seconds with one of the most impressive flying armbars I have ever seen. His opponent was a brown belt from the interior. This put JM in the finals. On the other end of the bracket was Matt and Clint Cooper. Matt lost his fight after being swept and knee-barred. Clint went on to fight JM in a rematch from the finals of the gi division. This time the score was much more even and the match back and forth. JM eventually lost by only advantages as I recall. Matt fought against the brown belt that JM had previously flying armbarred but was submitted via mounted arm bar.
All in all it was a great day for Van Isle BJJ. We look forward to the next competition which will likely be the Katana BJJ hosted Roots tournament in August.
