On May 28, 2016 the Van Isle Brazilian jiujitsu team participated in the 3rd Marcus Soares Invitation Submission Only Championships which were held at the Squamish Nation Recreation Centre in north Vancouver BC. The event was well although a little behind. There was a rules meeting early on hosted by Marcus Soares. The tournament allowed for Knee bars and straight ankles but did not allow toe holds and heelhooks. It was not a round robin event and was based on single round elimination. There was gi and no-gi. Advantages were awarded for submission attempts.
The competition team consisted of Julian Goodman, Pat Warren and Red Beard Will Protopapas and was coached by Matt de Groot. Pat fought first against Island competitor Scotty Conrad, a formidable opponent. Pat opened with a spectacular flying armbar which Scotty was able to fend off. There were several skirmished which saw attacks and defenses from both competitors. The match finally ended with Pat securing an arm bar and moving into his next fight. He fought a spry blue belt, but made wuick work of securing the back. From there he was patient in establishing a collar and working towards a single-wing choke. In Pat's third match (Finals) he fought a strong opponent who was aggressively seeking the takedown. Pat emerged on top after some struggle and was eventually submitted by an unorthodox and opportune shoulder lock to win the silver medal in his gi division.
Julian fought next against a North Van BJJ competitor. Julian started the match off with a guillotine choke from standing that ended up with Jules switching to a back take. He immediately rolled into the truck and attacked a banana split (electric chair). His opponent seemed unwilling to submit and so Jules decided to attack the back. The opponent was able to defend the attack but gave up side control. Jules advanced to mount. The opponent attempted to bridge out but left his arm available which Jules attacked with a swim move to spider web. In attacking the armlock, Jules' opponent was able to achieve the top closed guard position. From here Jules was able to scissor sweep to top single leg x. Jules' opponent made a mistake and allowed Jules to step over to his back. his opponent recovered side control during an attempted collar choke at which point Jules attempted to secure knee on belly. In doing so, the opponent bridged and was able to achieve an open guard. Jules passed and instantly began seeking a kimura by isolating an inverted triangle. Jules' weight was off and the opponent was able to come up to the top, defend the triangle and achieve top side control momentarily. In attacking a weak armbar, Jule's opponent allowed to Jules to come up and he defended the armlock which led to a knee on belly to mount transition. Again Jules could not secure the submission and was upa reversed while attempting a cross collar choke. The opponent attempted to straight ankle lock Jules as he did not feel that he could pass, in doing so he gave up top position. Jules defended the weak attack and rather than trying to pass, opted to attack a footlock of his own. It was deep and Jules even went belly down with juts the tip of the toes showing, but gave it up as the opponent did not appear willing to tap. after recovering to top passing position, Jules opponent attempted an omoplata which was easily defended and led to a pass in which Jules again attempted to sub via armlock. He was unable as the timer ran out. Due to submission attempts, Jules was awarded the victory.
Jule's next fight ended via wrist lock from an unorthodox leg drag position against an up island competitor Richard Jack from CJ's. Jules and Pat each won silver medals before continuing into the no gi event where they both got subbed by guys they each beat in the gi, lol.
Red Beard Will Protopapas did really well winning his first match by collar choke, however he lost his following match and did not place.
