Matthew’s Bio:
From an early age Matthew developed a strong passion for the martial arts. At the age of six, Matthew began training in shotokan karate under world champion and legend Warren Levi. Early on, Matthew demonstrated his thirst for competition as he went on to dominate the national karate scene. Matthew holds a brown belt in shotokan Karate. Matthew has been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu nearly every day for the last 13 years and holds the rank of Black Belt under Professor Filip Matos of Roll Academy.
It was years after Matthew’s training in Shotokan Karate, that began his training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, after his brother introduced him to the art. Right from the beginning he was hooked. He couldn’t believe how effective the techniques were, even considering his previous knowledge of the martial arts. He began training Jiu Jitsu daily and soon began competing regularly in Jiu Jitsu tournaments.
Matthew has proven himself amongst the top competitors in the Pacific Northwest often fighting up in weight as much as 30 lbs. He has won numerous titles such as the IBJJF Pan American Championships, the IBJJF Seattle Open (x3), the CBJJF Western Canadian (x2), and the CBJJF Provincial Championships. Recently Matthew achieved a life long goal of becoming an IBJJF Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World champion. He accomplished this feat along with his student and friend, Fred Jaskiewicz.
In addition to Jiu Jitsu, Matthew is an active member of the Victoria Judo Club in which he has been training for 7 years. Matthew holds the rank of Judo brown belt. He is passionate about all grappling arts, throwing and ground work included.
Matthew, alongside his brother, travels extensively to compete in the world’s most revered tournaments and learn under Jiu Jitsu’s most celebrated instructors. His thirst for knowledge is unquenchable as is his hunger to teach what he has learned. He is excited to continue to build a lifestyle firmly rooted in Jiu Jitsu and fitness and looks forward to what the future has to offer.
